RENIER Ranges, an incoming grade 12 student at the Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation (VMUF), brought home one gold and a silver medal when he represented Region 1 in the track events in the just concluded Palarong Pambansa, held in Marikina from July 30 to August 5.

Ranges clinched a gold medal in the first heat of the 100-meter dash, clocking 11.19 seconds, Palaro’s best time, against 24 competitors across the country.

However, he fell short in the 200-meter dash against Mico Villaran of Western Visayas,  with his 22.86 seconds run via a photo-finish with 0.852 second difference.

Despite the soft layering of the oval due to heavy rainfall, Ranges put in mind what his coach Dante Camaso instilled in him—to refrain from distractions and run at his best.

“I’m oozing with happiness right now, after all, I reaped the fruits of my labor, the hardships and sacrifices. It’s all worth it,” Ranges said in an interview with The PUNCH.

With his successful run in the cinder path during the Palaro, national champion Ranges is bound for Vietnam to compete in the ASEAN School Games this month after qualifying in the National Try-Outs Invitational. (Kim Gealogo, University of Luzon Intern)
