VMUF student fifth in World University Games in China
BEATS PERSONAL RECORD
TWENTY five year-old Rocky Feller Ramos, a fourth year student at the Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation (VMUF) in San Carlos City, placed fifth in the 100-meter run where he achieved his personal best time of 11.14 seconds during the 31ST FISU World University Games in Chengdu, China that opened last July 28 and ends on August 8.
The FISU World University Games, staged every two years in different countries and formerly known as Universiade, is being participated in by some 6,500 student-athletes across 113 countries competing in 18 sporting events.
A native of Brgy. Isla, San Carlos City, Ramos finished fifth in the stage qualifiers against known sprinters like Shaun Maswanganyi, a South-African Olympian who saw action in the Tokyo Olympics, who captured the gold by clocking 10.45 seconds, also earning his personal best record.
Ramos found consolation in his feat by besting two-time SEA Games veteran, Muhammad Ismail, who clocked 11.21, which was also his personal best.
Ramos remembered the encouragement given by his coach Dante Camaso and training program advisor Enzo Williams, who were not able to join him in China, to .focus and to perform as he had trained
Initially beset with financial woes, Ramos managed to join one of the world’s most prestigious university competitions with the help of the San Carlos City LGU headed by Mayor Julier Resuello.
“ I need to improve in every facet of the game after running against the best sprinters from different nations”, Ramos said after arriving from the competition.
Eyeing to become a member of the national team someday, Ramos continues to train for the Asian Games Qualifiers in September and the Philippine National Games in December. (Kim Gealogo, University of Luzon Intern)
