Most cybercrime victims reported in Pangasinan

THE Pangasinan Provincial Cyber Response Team (PPCRT) has identified online scams as the leading form of cybercrime-related incidents in Region I.

Six months after the first-ever Cyber Response Team in the region was established in Dagupan City, it has already recorded 80 confirmed cybercrime victims in the region, where 40-percent of complaints are from Pangasinan.

This was confirmed by P/Lt Sharmaine Labrado, PPCRT team leader, and identified online swindling or estafa, and investment scams that promise high profit yields as among the online scams that victimize most.

The most recent investment scam recorded is the ‘online paluwagan’ scheme lodged in Rosales PNP.

Labrado urged the public to fully identify the soliciting individual for the “investment”  that promises profits that no bank can provide before sending money,  so victims can complete data needed for the filing of a complaint.

And, while she also warned the public about applying for online selling jobs for “investments” because they could find themselves being charged for the scam complained about, she also urged the public not to share their passwords or One-Time-Pin even when asked to do so.

She warned against clicking links with invitations to participate in a game because it leads hackers to the individual’s device.

Labrado said the sharing of the OTP and/or password enables scammers to access their target victims’ bank accounts even with the two-way verification process.

She said most victims used their birthdates, or names of their children as passwords.

Persons victimized by scammers are urged to file their complaints at the  PPCRT office: Dagupan City People’s Astrodome in Barangay Tapuac in Dagupan City.

Even individuals who just need tips to prevent being victimized by suspicious solicitations are encouraged to seek help from  PPCRT.

The PPCTRT is on Facebook., or contact number 0949 881 9643. (Ahikam Pasion)
