City Hoops League 2 kicks off in San Carlos City
THE San Carlos City Hoops League Season 2 reeled off last June 25 at the Don Federico Mandapat Sports Dome with the participation of 33 cage teams.
San Carlos City Mayor Julier Resuello, guest of honor and speaker during the opening program presided over by City Hoops League founders Joel Tandoc De Guzman, Clinton Ferrer and Aldrin Austria, urged players and coaches to always practice sportsmanship and camaraderie.
The 33 teams that entered in the tournament are divided into three brackets and the top three teams that will be selected from each bracket will advance to the semi-final round.
During the league’s game-opener, the Perpetuals of Malasiqui shocked defending champion Mestizo Mixers of San Carlos City in a gut-wrenching finish, 101-97
Joel Tandoc De Guzman recalled how the hoop fest evolved from a simple pick-up game in an open court that had drawn interests among peers before the pandemic.
After the pandemic, De Guzman said the founders of the hoop fest decided to conduct the league to help encourage the youth of San Carlos City and other towns to stay away from vicious vices and drug addiction, develop their untapped potentials in playing basketball , and help promote physical fitness and good overall health in the community.
Co-founder Aldrin Austria said: “We want to give opportunities to the players to showcase their talents and skills in amateur basketball and to empower the youth since the league’s primary goal is to build the character of young people through sports-oriented disciplines and foster unity and harmonious relationship among them.”
