OPVET reports hog deaths, ASF feared

A NUMBER of hogs were reported to have died of mysterious causes in Pangasinan that prompted the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian (OPVET) to investigate and determine the causes.

According to the OPVET, infected hogs in undisclosed locations became sick, grew weaker, and eventually died. Bruises were also seen in the hogs’ carcasses.

The OPVET is determining whether the hogs died due to African Swine Fever (ASF), but other possibilities are not being ignored.

One possibility is hog cholera because of similar symptoms.

With this, the OPVET has issued stricter monitoring measures to pork products in municipal and city markets throughout Pangasinan.

OPVET ordered respective City and Municipal Veterinary Offices to check and verify permits of incoming pork products, whether live or processed, to ensure safe consumption.

As of writing, pork costs P320 to 330 per kilogram.  (Ahikam Pasion)
