THE Department of Health–Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) Ilocos Region continues to urge the public to vaccinate their pets with anti-rabies shots, after an increase in cases has been seen the previous weeks.

According to the DOH-Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU), 11 rabies cases were recorded in the region from January 1 to May 27 this year.

Pangasinan reported three cases, one each in Alaminos City, San Quintin, and Urbiztondo, making it the second province with the highest number of confirmed rabies cases.

The highest rabies cases were recorded in Ilocos Norte with five cases; two cases in La Union and one in Ilocos Sur.

DOH-CHD Regional Director Dr. Paula Paz Sydiongco says pet owners have the responsibility to annually inoculate their pets with anti-rabies shots, to ensure their safety, and not to potentially infect others.

Rabies, while lethal if left untreated, is 100-percent preventable if injected with anti-rabies vaccines.

The DOH has distributed 17,613 equine rabies immune globulin (ERIG) vials to provincial health offices in Region I, including Dagupan City Health Office, Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center in La Union, and the DOH Regional Office.

Meanwhile, 8,592 purified chick embryo cell (PCEC) rabies vaccines were also distributed. (Ahikam Pasion)
