TWO CITIES, THREE TOWNS IN WATCH LIST

DESPITE the hot, dry climate being experienced in Pangasinan has recorded a whopping 55.78-percent increase in dengue cases.

According to the Pangasinan Provincial Health Office (PHO) dengue surveillance report, January 1 to April 17 this year already recorded 296 cases, 106 cases more compared to last year.

Areas in PHO watchlist for high cases are San Carlos City, Calasiao, Urdaneta City, Bayambang, and Umingan.

Dr. Anna de Guzman, provincial health officer, said the spike in dengue cases is largely the result of sudden rains last month that resulted in many neglected areas with stagnant water, a prime nesting ground for mosquitoes.

Health authorities continue to remind the public that dengue is a perennial disease, caused by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito.

While dengue infection can prove fatal if left untreated, it can be prevented by regularly cleaning one’s surroundings, fogging, and self-protection.

Once hit with dengue, a patient may suffer nausea, vomiting, rashes, acne and pains, and high fever.

Once an individual begins to experience these symptoms, immediate medical attention should be sought. (Ahikam Pasion)
