THE Department of Health–Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) Region I is eyeing the inoculation of 935,130 children, aged five below in the region, as it ramps up the fight against measles-rubella, and polio.

Dr. Rheuel Bobis, Medical Officer IV of the DOH-CHD1, said among the near-one million children in the region, 431,162 children have been identified to need inoculation against measles and measles-rubella infection: 262,944 children are from Pangasinan; 16,162 are from Dagupan City; 60,026 from La Union; 50,285 from Ilocos Sur; and 41,745 in Ilocos Norte.

Meanwhile 503,968 children need oral polio vaccines: 307,548 are from Pangasinan; 18,915 from Dagupan City; 70,080 from La Union; 58,440 from Ilocos Sur; and 48,985 from Ilocos Norte.

Bobis said the free immunization is set from May 2 up until May 30 this year and LGUs expected install vaccination sites in their respective Rural Health Units or City Health Offices while others will mobilize vaccination staff for deployment to families unable to come to vaccination sites.

As of writing, regional coverage for measles, measles-rubella, and polio is only at 50 to 60 percent and is expected to be raised to ninety-five percent.

Aside from immunization, Vitamin A supplementation will be added to help children with their eyesight.

Bobis warned that measles and polio may be fatal if left untreated. Vaccination is the only way to prevent the sickness or minimize damage. (Ahikam Pasion)
