Presence, absence

THE absence of loved ones, for any reason, does not negate their presence in our daily lives. We hear them, we can feel their touch, they encroach in our dreams. Their presence sticks, glued to our consciousness.

Memory is a good thing, It could also be a curse. It leads to a longing, which can last a very long time. Forgetting is tricky. Like remembering, it takes down bits and pieces of memory, but also builds new layers to forget.

 I heard you

did you just say you love me?
not in so many words
but in the touch of your lips
on my shoulders
and your gentle hands
exploring my skin
like an avid traveler
not knowing
where to begin

you speak to me
in tongues

Persistence of Memory

he had forgotten to breathe,
years ago, but he resurrects
easily, in her mind, as fast as
the breath he had forgotten

in her dreams, he was this apparition
that comes close, closer
than the distance between
strands of hair, stuck together
by a bubble gum,
newly-chewed bubble gum
hardening very quickly
as saliva escapes
into the hot air

she wakes up, looking for scissors
to free her hair, but they were free
the wind blew them to her face
very gently, with the salty mist
of the blue sea
