IN the face of a hot, searing summer, the Department of Health – Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) Region I has raised the alarm, warning the public of ‘summer’ illnesses that occur at this time.

Dr. Rheuel Bobis of the CHD said the most common diseases that afflict most this dry season are diarrhea, food poisoning and sore eyes. But he also warned of increasing cases of number of rabies cases during summer.

Topping the list particularly when the heat index is high are exhaustion from heat and heat stroke for which Bobis urged the public to stay hydrated all the time.

Bobis warned that heat exhaustion could lead to heat stroke, which is a life-threatening condition.

Symptoms of heat stroke include altered mental status, fatigue, intense sweating, seizure, fainting, dry skin, and very high body temperature.

Once an individual feels the symptoms of heat stroke, he should be placed in a cool area immediately, and must be sponged with cool water.

Offering the patient chilled water or non-caffeine, non-alcoholic beverage can greatly help.

If a person is unconscious yet shows no sign of circulation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) must be done immediately. (Ahikam Pasion)
