MAYOR Belen Fernandez underscored the need for women to be protected from all forms of abuse and look after their mental well-being during the Women’s Forum on Violence Against Women and their Children (VAWC) and Mental Health held last March 24 at the City Astrodome as part of the 2023 National Women’s Month celebration.

Barangay health workers, barangay service point officers, barangay nutrition scholars and private institutions participated in the forum spearheaded by the City Social Welfare and Development Office, City Population Office, City Health Office and the Philippine Mental Health Association–Pangasinan Chapter.

Fernandez highlighted the important role women play in their families and communities where some, unfortunately become victims of violence or abuse.

“As a mayor, I will fight for what is right and as women, we can take the cudgels for our family. That is why I also feel your hardships and sacrifices,” the mayor said.

City Legal Officer Atty. Aurora Valle lectured on the VAWC law while PMHA Psychometrician Alexandra Villanueva discussed women’s mental health.

Atty. Cattleya de Guzman, Gender and Development Focal Person, said under the VAWC Law, emotional abuse is psychological violence.

Mayor Fernandez called on the barangay frontliners to make use of home visitation activities to report violence-related cases among residents because it is the responsibility of the city government to extend assistance to women or child victims of violence through the Women’s Center.
