THE agricultural town of Sto. Tomas is being eyed as the source of corn in the production of fish feeds for the eventual establishment of a feed mill, based on a plan by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources–Region 1.

At the first-ever Agri Trade Expo here on March 23 as part of the town’s fiesta celebration,  BFAR1 Regional Director Rosario Segundina P. Gaerlan informed the municipal officials about the agency’s plan to establish feed mill, and since corn is one of the main ingredient of fish feeds, the town can supply the raw material.

The town also opened its 5,000-square meter garden of assorted vegetables, and a catfish production pond because it plans to revive its fish pond production that stopped operations because of high cost of feeds and fingerlings.

Vice Mayor Timoteo Villar III said at least three barangays used to produce tilapia, covering around 10 hectares, but these have been abandoned.

BFAR also turned over 50,000 pieces of tilapia fry until they grow into fingerlings and ready for transfer in ponds for distribution to pond operators.

Mayor Dickerson Villar, son of the vice mayor, said he is interested in fishery, and added that the town will engage in aquaponics for catfish, which would be a first in Pangasinan.

“This program will provide livelihood to the poor residents and improve their living condition,” he said. (Eva Visperas)
