Price of rice is even higher during harvest season
NO RELIEF FOR HOUSEHOLDS
IT’S the harvest season for rice in Pangasinan but households are seeing its opposite effect in local market.
Instead of seeing a drop in prices of rice, the prices have increased: Prices of regular and well-milled rice range from P38 to P46, or a P1 increase, while prices of imported rice cost P40 to P46 per kilo, higher by P2 to P4.
Farmers attribute the increase in prices due to high cost of fertilizers used during the planting season.
Mang Rene, a farmer in Calasiao, said the increase in farmgate prices is the only way he and other farmers can recover their unexpected high production costs due to sudden increase of prices of fertilizers.
Meanwhile, the National Food Authority (NFA) is optimistic that supply of rice in the country will remain sufficient.
Price is expected to lower by April when the harvest season is nearing its end, making it the opportune time for NFA to purchase palay for its buffer stock. (Ahikam Pasion)
