SIXTEEN drug reformists or persons involved in illegal drugs completed their one-month rehabilitation conducted at the Balay Silangan Drug Reformation Center in San Carlos City.

They were the first group of drug reformists who underwent drug rehabilitation since Balay Silangan was put up by San Carlos City government under Mayor Julier Resuello.

The reformists came from seven barangays of San Carlos City and stayed at Balay Silangan for a month where they underwent value formation with the guidance of priests, pastors and counsellors as well performed physical exercises to develop their minds and bodies.

Their rehabilitation was provided for under the Dangerous Drugs Board Regulation No. 2, Series of 2018 that refers to community involvement in the reformation of drug offender, so that they can return to normal life as members of the society.

The reformists who left the Balay Silangan were given ceremonial send-off by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency Pangasinan Provincial Officer Rechie Camacho, along with officials of  LGU San Carlos City.

Camacho said the putting up of Balay Silangan Centers by LGUs is being encouraged to ensure that the drug user can be rehabilitated faster and speed up his or her return to a life without illegal drugs.

In the rehabilitation of a drug user, three things need to be done: community-based rehabilitation with the community and its people; counseling and consultation led by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and Department of Health; and moral recovery program led by members of the religious sector. (Jhon Caranto/IFM Dagupan)
