20 fire incidents recorded in 2023
PRANK CALLERS WARNED
TWENTY fire incidents have been recorded in Pangasinan by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) since the onset of 2023, lower than the 35 fire incidents were recorded in 2022.
In its tally from January to February this year, F/Chief Inspector Jun Eland Wanawan, OIC-Provincial Fire Marshal, said structural fires top the list, specifically, electrical overloading as the leading cause of fire in the province.
Electrical overloading results in fire when a source supplies more than what it could handle.
He clarified, too, that houses made of light materials are the easiest to be hit by fire because lack firewalls or other parts which may delay or contain the fire.
Second in the list are external causes such as burning of leaves near the house, while third cause comes from neglected burning stoves.
Wanawan urged the public to reinforce their electrical sources and do regular maintenance since electrical appliances could be the cause of short circuits, given their quality and age.
“Kung bibili ng appliances dapat may sticker ng Quality Check upang makaiwas sa aberya”, he said.
He also warned that smoking in the house also poses a risk.
Meanwhile, Wanawan warned against prank callers because calls can be traced and once identified, the callers will be charged criminally.
He issued the warning after some stations have been receiving reports of fire incidents that turned out to be prank calls.
He said, like other government departments and agencies, the BFP can file charges against prank callers for malicious intent aimed at wasting government resources.
Wanawan said all calls reporting fire incidents are treated seriously and fire trucks are dispatched quickly.
“Kahit hindi pa nasisigurong false alarm lamang ang tawag, reresponde pa rin ang mga bumbero sa lugar na natukoy”, he said,
Meanwhile, Wanawan also urged motorists to give way as soon as they hear firetruck sirens because any delay in response time can be disastrous. (Ahikam Pasion)
