Officials of Dagupan public schools fear for safety of students

OFFICIALS of public schools in Dagupan City expressed their concern over the safety and welfare of the students and learners over the failure of the city government to do immediate repair of school buildings, dilapidated classrooms and school grounds.

The concerns were presented to Mayor Belen Fernandez last week when she turned over gardening tool, i.e., wheelbarrow, shovel, rake, trowel, hedge shears, ax, bolo, cultivator and watering can, etc. for their ‘Gulayan sa Paaralan’ program from the Dagupan City government.

The school officials and teachers who received the garden tools aired their concerns over the urgent need not only for the repair and maintenance of classrooms and school buildings, but for security and maintenance personnel and construction of pathways as well.

Mayor Fernandez admitted she cannot do much for these problems because the 2023 annual budget has not been passed by the Sangguniang Panlungsod but will prioritize concerns given the very little budget remaining in the city government. (Joana de Vera)

Lingayen, Binmaley coastal areas under threat

THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) in Region I have been holding meetings with the provincial government in a bid to improve and protect the coastal areas in Binmaley and Lingayen.

MGB cited the results of the Rapid Coastal Vulnerability Mapping that showed the two adjacent towns’ rivers often overflow their banks because of the large deposit of silt in Barangay Pangapisan Norte down to Maniboc.

The agency suggested continuous dredging operations in the area by the provincial government to prevent flooding but there are processes that need to be done before this project can be undertaken.

Second District Rep. Mark Cojuangco, who was in that forum, suggested to the provincial government to invite technical personnel to study the flooding problems of the two towns. (Joann de Vera)

Training on new, unique dance steps in Gilon Gilon street dance on

PERFORMERS and choreographers participating in the Gilon Gilon Ed Dalan during the Dagupan Bangus Festival in April have started their training in preparation for the event.

Mayor Belen Fernandez said the training focuses on new and unique dance steps in Gilon Gilon Street Dance depicting the actual movements of fishermen while harvesting Dagupan bangus, the number one agricultural product of the city.

Members of the event creative management team from the Cebu Sinulog Festival were invited by Mayor Fernandez to Dagupan to share their knowledge in organization, design and concept in a bid to improve the Bangus Festival, particularly, the Gilon Gilon Street Dance.

There are five new dance steps that will be incorporated in the Gilon Gilon Street Dance to be adopted by each entry. These new dance steps are considered unique and never before seen in past editions of the Bangus Festival. (Rona Racca)
