Images of saints to be etched on fallen ancient trees

ANCIENT trees in Mangatarem that fell last year at the height of a strong typhoon are being preserved by the townspeople on which images of Saint Mary and Saint Raymundo de Penafort, the patron saint of the town can be etched by local artists.

Residents who grew up with the full-grown trees said they need to preserve the memory of the trees planted by their elders, having served as mute witnesses to the growth and progress of Mangatarem, many of which already existed during the Spanish regime.

These ancient trees used to adorn the town and provide shades to the people and weary travelers for centuries until these were felled and uprooted by the typhoon last year.

Instead of allowing the trees to be cut into pieces as lumber to serve as construction materials, residents decided that the memories of these trees be preserved by having images of the Virgin Mary and Saint Raymundo de Penafort etched on them. (Joana de Vera)

“No assignment, no project” for learners during semestral break

THE Department of Education school division in Dagupan is implementing a “no assignment, no project” policy for learners who are now on a week-long semestral break starting February 6.

DepEd earlier instructed all teachers in the Dagupan school division not to give any assignment or project to their pupils and students to work on during their semestral break.

This will enable the learners to take a breather from their academic studies while on a semestral break at home with their loved ones.

While the learners are on semestral break, their teachers are undergoing training that will help them adjust to the current new normal  face-to-face classes after the long pandemic.

The learners will return to school on February 13. (Rona Racca)
