San Nicolas residents laud local SAF hero
8TH YEAR COMMEMORATING FALLEN 44
RESIDENTS of San Nicolas town commemorated the heroism of their PO2 Ephraim Mejia, one of the fatalities in the heroic sacrifice of SAF 44, on Wednesday, January 25, eight years after the ambush in Maguindanao.
Town mayor Alice Primicias-Enriquez, along with Pangasinan Police Provincial Office (PPPO) Director P/ Colonel Jeff Fanged, led the 2023 Day of National Remembrance for the Heroic Sacrifice of SAF 44 in Mamasapano, Maguindanao.
A wreath-laying ceremony, followed by a 21-gun salute was held in the town’s municipal ground.
Helen Mejia, mother of PO2 Mejia, her only child, attended the event.
In her short remarks, Mrs. Mejia thanked the PPPO and the San Nicolas government for continuing to remember his late son’s sacrifice.
Fanged urged the police, particularly the junior officers, to be inspired by the gallant 44’s bravery and willingness to give up their lives for the country even as he reminded that while giving up oneself is a noble act, policemen should be mindful of their personal safety all the time.
Mejia, a native of San Nicolas, together with his 43 comrades, were killed in the ambush staged by the terrorists who protected Malaysian terrorist and bomb-maker Zulkifli Abdhir and other high-ranking members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) inside their camp in Mamasapano.
The SAF operation on January 25, 2015, turned into a bloody massacre after the Aquino government failed to send reinforcements in time. (Ahikam Pasion)
