Price of lasona, alternative to onion, also spikes
THE price of lasona, an alternative to onion, also increased to P200 per kilo last week from P100 per kilo during the previous week in the Dagupan City market.
Vegetable vendors told IFM Radio Dagupan that the spike in price per kilo of lasona was due to the short supply of the commodity brought by traders or by farmers themselves to the market contrary to the claim of the Department of Agriculture in Region 1 that there are 5,47 metric tons of lasona for sale in the region.
Meanwhile, the price of onion in many markets continues to remain sky high from P600 per kilo to P700 per kilo.
In Dagupan, the price of red onion of poorer quality is pegged at P400 per kilo because of dwindling supply as well.
Meanwhile, farmers from the onion-producing town of Bayambang slammed the decision of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to import onion from abroad despite their ongoing onion harvest.
They fear that once the imported onion arrives, it will directly compete with their own produce onion and will result in more losses and only the importers benefit.
Saying the decision to import onion was not well studied, they maintained that their freshly harvested onion will likely be swamped and will not be able to recover again from the high costs of production.
Bayambang alone has planted 1,500 hectares of of land to onion. (Joana de Vera)
