HOLIDAY EATING, DIETING, FASTING

AWARE of the festive mood in the region after almost two years of isolation and restrictive way of life during the pandemic, the National Nutrition Council (NNC) Region 1 issued its “friendly warning” to families and communities health risks due to excessive eating, dieting and fasting.

First about intermittent fasting, keto, etc. that most resort to, to lose weight.

Dr. Kendal Gatan, NNC Region 1 officer-in-charge, said the body needs proper nutrition and energy to function properly and intermittent fasting can cause more health risks.

Intermittent fasting refers to eating only during a limited window, and fasting for over extended periods, i.e., eating only within the six-hour window, but must fast the remaining 18 hours.

Gatan said the NNC issued a policy statement in 2018 against fad diets, discouraging it because these known to have resulted in complications in the human body, citing possible pressure on internal organs.

Instead, the NNC promotes holistic, sustainable, adequate, and nutritionally balanced diet, along with active lifestyle, and lifelong behavioral modification.

Short-term lang ang epekto ng klase ng fad diets, pero kapag nahinto yan, lalong magkakaproblema,” said Gatan.

Claribel Catingil, a registered nutritionist dietician and NNC Development Officer, said intermittent fasting or fad diets are only recommended for individuals with health problems.

Gatan also advised that salty, fatty, and sweet foods should be limited, as non-communicable diseases such as stroke, heart attacks, and diabetes are common during this time of the year.

Then, since much leftover foods are being refrigerated for later consumption, Gatan warned that it could only be refrigerated for a week.

Meanwhile the Department of Health (DOH) also warned the public against too much ‘lechon’.

Dr. Rheuel Bobis, spokesperson of the DOH-Center for Health Development Region I said while lechon consumption has been part of the Filipino culture, moderation should be taken into consideration. (Ahikam Pasion)
