Snails disrupt rice planting in Mangaldan

SOME farmers in Mangaldan are no longer keen on planting rice in their irrigated farm lands during the current dry months unless the government can provide a quick solution to infestation created by snails that had invaded their fields.

According to the farmers, they could have started planting rice last month but they saw snails crowding their farms and feared the situation may still become worse.  They asked the Municipal Agriculture Office and the Department of Agriculture to come to their rescue since they cannot eradicate the snails on their own.

The farmers learned that the snails, which have the capacity to reproduce fast in a very short period, came with the irrigation water released to their rain-fed farms by the National Irrigation Administration. (Jhon Caranto)
