Onion price expected to be higher this month

EXPECT prices of onion to increase because of the increased demand during the holiday season, despite the ongoing harvests in Pangasinan’s neighboring provinces.

According to 38-year-old Ronnie Ringor, an onion farmer and trader in Bayambang, he expects onions from Tarlac province to be sold in Pangasinan earlier because the bulb formation of onions in his town are not expected to occur until the next few weeks.

The onion farmgate price is currently at P190 to P200 pesos, but it spikes to P300 to P350 once it reaches the market.

Ringor said farmgate price is low due to low yield or harvest on account of past weather disturbances during the typhoon season but the costs to produce it was high, hence,

they do have no choice but to raise the farmgate price of onions to break even.

“Kasama rin sa nagpapataas ng presyo ng sibuyas yung mga farm input o gastusin namin hindi lang abono kundi pati mga maintenance din”, said Ringor.

Even the price of diesel, used to transport raw materials and even the harvested onions have to be considered, too.

The peak season of onion harvest in Bayambang town starts February to March.

Ringor said, fortunately, the dreaded army worms have not appeared because of the cold weather. (Ahikam Pasion)
