Gov. Guico: Only P4.5-M lost in agri
POST TYPHOON KARDING
PANGASINAN sustained negligible damages from the onslaught of Typhoon “Karding” before it hitg3e3 the province at dawn on Monday, September 26.
This was affirmed by Governor Ramon Guico III in an interview with ABS-CBN Tele-Radyo the following day.
Gov. Guico said P4.5 million worth of agricultural products were lost from the typhoon at the height of the Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal Number 4 in southern and western Pangasinan and No. 3 in northern Pangasinan, including Dagupan City and Lingayen.
Among the reported losses were P4.1 million worth of palay while the P450,000 damages to infra were in the towns of Mabini, San Fabian and Bautista. In Mangatarem, 75 houses were blown away but no casualty or injury was reported.
The damaged vegetables and other crops were in southwestern Pangasinan due mainly to strong wind of Typhoon “Karding,” Guico said.
The earlier feared cyclone spared the eastern and central parts of the province, where large tracts of rice lands are located.
He said the provincial government will provide seeds and fertilizers to farmers who lost their palay that were about to be harvested, for their second crop next year since replanting at this time will no longer be feasible.
He called on Congress to revise the Crop Insurance Law so more farmers can be assisted and recover their losses each time calamity strikes
He said the existing law only extends crop insurance at a given season but this is not practical at this time because of climate change. (Leonardo Micua)
