SOME 1,100 residents belonging to more than 200 families in coastal communities were preemptively evacuated before Typhoon “Karding” struck Pangasinan early Monday morning, according to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).

This was reported  by Patrick Aquino, PDRRMO operations supervisor, who said the preemptive evacuation of residents resulted in zero casualty in the province.

Also, no fishermen were reported missing because they had been forewarned and prevented from sailing out for two to three days before Typhoon Karding made a landfall in the eastern part of the country.

Those evacuated were from Sual, Alaminos, Bani, Anda, Bolinao, San Fabian, Lingayen, Aguilar and Bugallon.

Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development  (DSWD) Field Office 1 reported that 289 persons or 77 families were evacuated in seven evacuation centers  in Dagupan City and in landlocked towns Urbiztondo, Batista, Alcala and Manaoag.

On order of Gov. Ramon Guico III, PDRRMO pre-positioned its men and equipment in Tayug and Burgos towns two days before the typhoon.

Fortunately, Pangasinan was spared from a major calamitous situation when only brief rains and few hours of gusty winds were felt after midnight. Minimal damages were noted in agriculture as well as in infrastructure.

The only major damage to infrastructure reported was the landslide along the Villa Verde Road connecting San Nicolas, Pangasinan and Sta. Fe, Nueva Vizcaya, particularly in Barangay Malico, San Nicolas, that closed it to all vehicular traffic until clearing operations could be completed.

The preemptive evacuation of residents of Dagupan, particularly in perennially-flooded areas, was ordered by Mayor Belen Fernandez.

The swimming at the Tondaligan Beach, in Lingayen and San Fabian beaches was not allowed until “Karding” exited from the province. (Leonardo Micua)
