THE Department of Education’s (DepEd) ‘Gulayan sa Paaralan’ program can be expected to serve as a sustainable source of food in the community in Dagupan City.

This was the hope expressed by Mayor Belen Fernandez under whose administration food security is considered one of its top priorities, when she attended the the ‘Saganang Gulayan Organiko ang Dahilan’ Division Training on Black Soldier Fly Farming, Solid Waste Management and Urban Gardening’ spearheaded by the DepEd Dagupan City Schools Division Office (SDO) on Sept. 29 at the SDO.

Some 39 teachers from public elementary and secondary schools who serve as Gulayan sa Paaralan Focal Persons or Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) Coordinators participated in the training.

Mayor Fernandez encouraged the students and parents to adopt and apply the techniques they learn from the program in their own homes and become a source of food for the family and the community.

In partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources at City Agriculture Office (CAO), the event also featured the launching of the Search for the Best Edible Landscaping in Public Elementary and Secondary Schools in Dagupan.

Schools Division Superintendent (SDS) Aguedo Fernandez said the training aims to integrate organic farming in the Gulayan sa Paaralan program among public elementary and secondary schools in the city under the guidance of the Gulayan sa Paaralan Focal Persons or TLE Coordinators.

Parents-Teachers Association and the barangay councils also participated in the program for ‘green thumbers’.

One of the topics included in the training involves Urban Gardening, a flood-free approach in planting with the use of pots or containers. (Dagupan CIO News)
