GOV. Ramon Guico III ordered the investigation of the delayed construction of the Labit Proper Bridge in Urdaneta City, a project of the past provincial administration started in November 2021.

The bridge project that didn’t show a single post erected was discovered during an ocular inspection conducted by Mrs. Maan Guico and Councilor Jesus Basco, both representing Governor Guico last week.

The 30-lineal meter provincial bridge was funded at a cost of P14,986, 490.26 sourced from the Repair and Maintenance of Roads and Bridges Fund of the provincial government and the contract to reconstruct the Labit Proper Bridge was won by the Alphonse Trading & Construction.

The contractor was given up to 258 calendars days from November 2021 or until July17, 2022, to finish the construction of the bridge. Instead, only a foot bridge for pedestrians is found in its place since the old bridge was destroyed.

Barangay Labit Proper chairman Policarpio Galvan said the old bridge had been serving residents of Barangays Labit Proper, Labit West, Catalan, Palina Sugcong and Oltama in Urdaneta City, till it reached its dilapidated state.

Residents today are forced to travel some distance to reach the other side of the river.

Policarpio said the contractor never returned to start the construction after the old bridge was dismantled. (Leonardo Micua)
