Leptospirosis cases 4% lower but 2 fatalities
THE Pangasinan Provincial Health Office (PHO) recorded only 25 leptospirosis cases in the province from January 1 to January 29 this year compared to last year’s 26 cases.
Dr. Anna de Guzman, PHO chief, however, pointed out that there are fewer cases this year, the number of fatalities has doubled with two compared to only one last year.
Most of the patients belong to the 20 to 29 age bracket.
The month of August has recorded the most cases due to flooding.
“Napipilitan lumusong sa tubig ang mga tao dahil baha, yung iba kahit mayroong sugat sumusuong pa rin”, De Guzman said.
Municipalities included in the PHO watchlist are Bautista, Binalonan, Sual, and Santa Maria.
De Guzman urged the public not to wade in floodwaters if they have an open wound in the foot or legs because its how people get infected with leptospirosis.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection spread through animal urine. Symptoms may include headaches, muscle aches, jaundice, vomiting, diarrhea, and skin rash.
Since many of the symptoms are similar to other illnesses such as the flu, testing is important. (Ahikam Pasion)
