Enough pork supply in Pangasinan markets — Provincial Vet Office
DESPITE BAN VS. ENTRY OF HOGS
THE supply of pork in the local market remains adequate despite the ban on the entry of swine from provinces in Central Luzon still affected by the African Swine Fever (ASF).
Dr. Jovito Tabarejos, acting provincial veterinarian, said the ban applies to hogs from Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Bataan and Nueva Ecija, all of which are still ASF-affected.
He said checkpoints remai in place in the border areas to check not only the entry of hogs but also fowls, chicken and their carcasses in compliance with the executive order issued by Gov. Ramon Guico III.
Pangasinan was also affected by ASF starting in the last quarter of 2019 when hogs from Rizal and Bulacan were surreptitiously brought to the province by unscrupulous traders.
Commercial hog farms in Pangasinan that adopted strict biosecurity in their premises, were visibly less affected by ASF and are supplying the increased demand for pork in the local markets, Tabarejos said.
He said some backyard raisers who resumed production using the sentinel pigs provided by the Department of Agriculture noted some successes in their venture on seeing their pigs survive till they reach marketable sizes.
Tabarejos also cited the imported frozen pork that passed strict inspection in Manila and one also being sold in the market.
He said households too can buy chicken meat as an alternative to pork.
Tabarejos noticed too that meat dealers in Pangasinan are also buying hogs from the Bicol region and in other provinces that are still safe from ASF. (Leonardo Micua)
