Sta. Barbara town faces more flooding
ZERO MAINTENANCE OF EARTH DIKES
RESIDENTS of Sta. Barbara may expect more flooding in the absence of effective protection from the earth dikes.
According to the town’s Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, this is largely the result of the weak foundations of the dikes after three years without regular maintenance.
Ray Santos, Sta. Barbara MDRRMO Chief, said as the water level in Sinocalan River rises by critical seven meters above sea level, the most of the town can expect flooding to occur.
Santos said earth dikes in Barangays Alibago, Dalongue, Poblacion Norte, and Maningding, were not maintained for the past three years, during the term of then Mayor Joel delos Santos.
“Lahat ng earth dikes natin three years na pong walang maintenance, kaya doon kami nagkakaproblema”, Santos added.
He added that the former administration had only installed temporary protection around the dikes.
With this, Santos urged all barangay officials to monitor their areas of responsibility for possible flooding.
Santos also urged Mayor Carlito Zaplan to fix the earth dikes.
“Nirekomenda po natin na pataasin din po ito”, he said. (Ahikam Pasion)
