Huge turnout for voter-registration surprises Comelec
THE number of newly-registered voters in Pangasinan for the Barangay and SK Elections (BSKE) on December 5 have exceeded the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) expectations.
This, after the office recorded a total of 122,546 newly-registered voters from their voter registration program from July 4 to July 23.
SK voters, aged 15 to 17 years old, had 69,352 new registrants, while newly-registered voters 18 and above are at 53,194.
Atty. Marino Salas, provincial supervisor, said the high turnout for the voter registration exceeded Comelec’s expectations, as it only expected some 75,000 newly-registered voters in the province.
“Very active sila, talagang nagpaparehistro sila ngayon lalo na yung mga Sangguniang Kabataan”, Salas happily said.
He attributed the huge turnout to the increased public trust in the election process, which was proven in the previous May 9 National and Local Elections.
“Another is the access sa social media, na nakikita na nila lalo ng mga kabataan yung kahalagahan ng boto nila”, Salas added.
Meanwhile, Salas said Comelec continues to prepare for the Barangay-SK elections despite talks of postponing it are being discussed in Congress.
“Kami sa COMELEC ay patuloy na maghahanda. We will comply with whatever the law will require,” Salas said. (Ahikam Pasion)
