Employment rate in Region 1 up 94.1%
THE employment rate in Ilocos Region has increased by 94.1% as of April 2022, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
In a forum, PSA Regional Director. Sheila de Guzman said some 2.3 million out of 2.5 million individuals aged 15 and above were in the labor sector.
Majority of these were in the agriculture, industry, and services sector.
Effectively, De Guzman said unemployment rate decreased by 5.9% or
1.6 % lower than the 7.5% recorded on January 2022 – estimated to be 163,000 individuals.
Unemployed persons include individuals aged 15 and above who are ready to work, and those doing job search.
While unemployment rate has decreased, the underemployment rate has increased by 26%, higher against January 2022 statistics with 14.7 percent.
Last 2021, the underemployment rate was 17.7 %. The 26 percent underemployment rate was estimated to be 373,000 individuals.
De Guzman attributed the increase in the underemployment rate due to the inflation, forcing people to undertake other jobs, or to work overtime.
The total labor force participation in Region 1 last April 2022 was 68.5%. (Ahikam Pasion)
