Another Espino ambusher arrested by CIDG

ONE of the principal accused in the attempted slaying/ambuscade of former Fifth District Rep. Amado Espino Jr. on September 11, 2019 was arrested in the early morning of June 24 in Barangay Mawaque, Mabalacat, Pampanga by joint police operatives.

The suspect, Sherwin Diaz, an ex-Army Ranger from Barangay Caturay Sur, Mangatarem,

was arrested by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG)(lead team), Provincial Intelligence Unit of the Pangasinan Police Office, Aviation Security Intelligence Unit and the Mabalacat Police Station by virtue of a warrant of arrest for the crime of murder (two counts), frustrated murder and three counts of frustrated murder issued by Regional Trial Court Judge Magnolia Cayetano of Branch 56 in San Carlos City.

Diaz, identified as a member of the Sison Group of criminal syndicate, is in the PNP target list being a member of a Potential Private Armed Group involved in gun-for-hire activity in Pangasinan and the adjacent provinces.

He is also listed in the DILG Most Wanted Person under DILG Memorandum Circular No. 2001-10 dated October 20, 2021 with a P405,000 reward for his arrest and capture.

Diaz was presented to newsmen in a press conference presided by P/Lt. Colonel Bernouli Abalos, provincial director of CIDG in Pangasinan, at the CIDG office in Dagupan City at noon on June 24.

The ambuscade took place in the afternoon of September 11, 2019 in the boundary of Barangay Ilang and Magtaking, San Carlos City that resulted in the death of P/Staff Sergeant Richard Esguerra and Agapito Cuison and the wounding of Espino’s security aide P/Sgt. Jayson Malsi, Anthony Columbino, driver of the back-up vehicle, and Kerwin Marpuri, a nurse.

The other accused in the Espino ambuscade, were Albert Palisoc, Armando Frias, Benjie Resultant, Joey Ferrer, Alfred Pascaran, Ronnie de los Santos, Jerry Pascua, Teofilo Ferrer, a certain Ruseller, Jewel Castro, John Paul Regalado and 10 other John Does.

All of the accused, except for one, have been arrested and are now attending trial of their cases.

Espino survived the incident but sustained multiple gunshot wounds on his right forearm and abdomen. (Buth Uka)
