Asingan sets eyes on 2023 Guinness World Record
KANKANEN FESTIVAL
DON’T look now but the Asingan town’s ‘Kankanen Festival’ will likely find itself in the Guinness Book of World Records next year after its successful celebration last week after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In an interview, Asingan Mayor Carlos Lopez Jr. said his town plans to make a one-kilometer long kankanen (native rice delicacy) in next year’s celebration.
“Hangarin nating makilala ang bayan bilang may pinakamahabang handang kakanen sa buong mundo”, he said.
The original plan was to hold it this year, but it had to be postponed to next year because some COVID-19 restrictions are still in effect this year.
The plan is to start the one-kilometer inkiwar (rice cake) from the Ramos Bridge connecting the towns of Asingan and Santa Maria.
Lopez said there will be enough supply of the glutinous rice (or malagkit) cooked in thickened caramelized coconut milk and curds to make it to Guinness World Record.
Aside from the production of eggplants and other vegetables, the municipality of Asingan is also known for its high yield of glutinous rice.
Michael Soliven, the town’s Tourism Officer, said 80% of the farmlands in the town are planted with rice, including the glutinous variety. (Ahikam Pasion)
