Quo vadis, COVID-19?

THE national Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases has, of late, been downplaying the predicted surge in COVID-19 cases across the country.

The provincial IATF is echoing the same.

But the context of a surge continues to be about level of contagion, specifically numbers of mild, moderate and severe cases caused by variants or sub-variants. Nothing is said and heard from IATF, not even from the World Health Organization, about the severity of  symptoms of infections of new variants in persons.

Could the new variants be worse than dengue that has sent more to hospitals than COVID-19 infection?

An unvaccinated child in Mangaldan town was reported to have died from COVID-19. Could the case be more alarming than the increasing number of children hit by dengue or flu?

Surely there are great lessons to be learned from countries that recently saw a surge in cases. Where did these countries go wrong? Can we, in fact, avoid another crisis by just maintaining the minimum health protocols?

A qualitative report, more than numbers, will empower families to better understand the risks and options for their health care.

Like ice cream

JUST eight days after a gun-crazed teenager killed 19 students and two teachers in Uvaldo, Texas, another mad gunman shot dead four persons, including himself, in a hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Thursday, June 1.  The Tulsa incident was the 214th mass shooting in the US this year, while the Texas massacre was America’s 27th school shooting in 2022.  What is happening in the US, the so-called land of milk and honey?  Why must insanity rule? Americans know the answer: Gun controls are never airtight since time immemorial.  The National Rifle Association (NRA) of the US alone is so powerful it practically influences many politicians to remain conservative insofar as gun ownership is concerned. So that, in most states in the US, guns can be bought over the counter like ice cream by an 18-year-old or above.  The Texas shooter was 18 years old.  US President Biden has condemned the killings but is that enough?

About time action supplanted words.
