City university suspends classes twice
THREAT OF TERRORISM TO STOP EXAMS?
A university in Dagupan City suspended its classes for two consecutive days after one department head and 15 other employees received threats via e-mail, forcing them to postpone the examinations and classes.
The university first received an e-mail from a Gmail account Tuesday morning, May 31, of a person that identified himself/herself as a student of the university and threatened of ‘unspeakable’ acts of terrorism” if classes were to continue.
This prompted the university admin to instruct all students to go home on the pretext of simulating on emergency situation.
Dagupan City Police Station immediately dispatched personnel and even the k9 unit in order to determine if bombs were planted in the buildings. The search turned negative.
The admin decided to move the classes and examinations on June 1, Wednesday, but was once again postponed after another message was received.
The university admin decided to tighten security protocols and started employing metal detectors and strict bag inspections at the university entrance.
Additional security and police personnel were deployed as deterrent.
Police and the university officials are collaborating to track the source and sender of the threatening mails.
A possible motive being looked into is a prank by a student who wanted scheduled exams to be postponed or cancelled.
A similar incident occurred in another university in the city in 2018.
The admin also received threats of bombing the university, if classes were to continue that day.
Coincidentally, much like the recent incident, an examination was also being held that day. With the threat being sent to individuals, the university admin also decided to postpone classes.
Seeing similarities with the previous 2018 incident and now, authorities may have been suspecting this may be a heartless prank in order to move or suspend examinations.
“This may be a bad joke, but in line of recent school incidents, we will not take this lightly”, according to a university employee who asked his name not to be identified. (Ahikam Pasion)
