Bolinao’s shellfish samples test positive for red tide toxin
SHELLFISH samples collected from the coastal waters of Bolinao have been found positive for paralytic shellfish poison (PSP) or red tide toxin.
Local Shellfish Advisory No. 1, series of 2022 dated April 7, signed by Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Regional Director Rosario Segundina Gaerlan, confirmed that the PSP toxin level in shellfish sample collected from the said area is 249 ug STX/100g shellfish meat.
“Thus, to avoid PSP, the public is advised to refrain from eating, gathering or harvesting, transporting and marketing all types of shellfish and Acetes sp or alamang gathered from coastal water of Bolinao until the shellfish toxicity level has gone down below the regulatory limit of 60ugSTX/100 g shellfish meat,” Gaerlan said.
She clarified, however, that fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs harvested from the area are safe from human consumption provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly and their internal organ such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking.
She also assured that BFAR regional Office 1 is continuously monitoring the coastal water of Bolinao to safeguard public health and protect the fishery industry. (Eva Visperas)
