AFTER two years of difficulties finding ways to reach relatives from both sides, Pangasinan and Metro Manila, in the least expensive and readily available transport between the two points since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, families today are finally able to plan and travel with ease on board buses with regular scheduled trips.

For too long, Pangasinenses were deprived of opportunities and convenience to travel and visit relative on both sides not only because of the pandemic but because of an attempt by the DOTr/Land Transportation Franchise and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to compel bus companies in the north to use the North Luzon Express Terminal in Bocaue, Bulacan and to pay the exorbitant fees the latter demanded. The bus companies naturally balked at the rule and went on to operate circuitous routes, though inconvenient, to serve our families.

Unknown to many, there was Health Secretary Francisco T. Duque III, who on his own, tried on numerous occasions but failed, to persuade his peers in the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) to withdraw its resolution that the DOTr/LTFRB invoked to force bus companies to use NLET.  The pressure on the body to reject him was unrelenting.

When Alert Level 1 was finally declared in both Pangasinan and Metro Manila, he argued impassionately for the withdrawal of the resolution and restore the convenience and inexpensive travel for Pangasinan families. This time the majority backed him.

Pangasinan families have Dr. Duque and Gov. Amado Espino III who was also quick to assure IATF of the provincial government’s commitment to strictly enforce health protocols if the resolution is rescinded at any time, to thank for the restoration of the old normal.

Pacquiao for Lacson

IN his TV/Radio morning program on Cignal’s OnePh/92.3 FM kilohertz on Thursday, Ted Failon asked Manny Pacquiao: “If you are not running for President, whom will you vote for President on May 9?”  Without batting an eyelash, Pacquiao answered: “Ping Lacson.”  That was a bit of a shocker for Pacquiao’s camp as the prudent thing to do would have been for Pacquiao to avoid naming his preferred candidate.  For, in Pacquiao singling out Lacson, his action had taken the instant form of endorsement. Meaning, outside of himself, Pacquiao had picked Lacson as the people’s correct choice for President.  In so doing, Pacquiao laid bare again his true character: honest to a fault.  Pacquiao is Pacquiao. He talks from the heart.  Doesn’t care if his words would hurt—as when he openly lambasted same-sex marriage that drew the ire of LGBTQs (gays) a while back.

As for Lacson, he owes Pacquiao one. Big time.
