471 ‘loose’ firearms surrendered, 149 from pols
OPLAN KATOK ACCOMPLISHMENT
THE regional police’s Oplan Katok resulted in the surrender of 471 loose firearms for safekeeping by police stations.
P/Brig. Gen. Emmanuel Peralta, Police Regional Office 1 director, said the ongoing campaign encouraged licensed gun holders (whose licenses have expired and have not been renewed) to surrender and deposit their firearms with the different police stations regionwide.
Of the surrendered firearms, 149 belonged to 123 political candidates while 268 were from 149 private individuals.
“We are closely working with the COMELEC (Commission on Elections) and our AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) counterparts in order to sustain what we have started well,” Peralta said.
He attributed the success of the campaign to “Oplan Katok” as a result of the region’s intensified campaign vs unlicensed firearms during the campaign period leading to the national and local election day .
Oplan Katok engages police personnel with firearm holders in their home addresses who have not yet renewed their firearm licenses and registration.
Peralta said all police campaigns including “Oplan Katok,” and checkpoint operations will not only be sustained but intensified as part of the PNP’s anti-criminality campaign to deter crimes and preempt illegal activities especially during the election period. (Eva Visperas)
