THE Ilocos Center for Health Development (CHD) expressed confidence that herd immunity can be achieved in Region 1 on or before the end of the first quarter this year.

Dr. Rheuel Bobis, COVID-19 focal person of the CHD-1, said as of February 9, there were already fully vaccinated 3,184,931 individuals or 59.5% of the total eligible population for vaccination in the region. Herd immunity is attained when 70% of the total eligible population have been inoculated with COVID-19 vaccines.

Given the recent data, only 10.5% or 535,314 individuals in the region need to be fully vaccinated on or before the end of March 2022.

The target date, however, could come sooner because more than 200 areas in the region joined the third series of the National Vaccination Days, February 10 and 11, also known as “Bayanihan Bakunahan,” an intensified vaccination campaign launched by the national government to encourage residents to get their COVID-19 jabs.

Meanwhile, Bobis said the campaign vs. COVID-19 is seeing better days ahead.

As of February 10, bed utilization rate in the region is at 30-40%, considered a low-risk level. (Ahikam Pasion)
