45 gun ban violators nabbed, 118 firearms seized in region

THE Police Regional Office 1 (PRO1) arrested 45 gun ban violators and confiscated at some 118 firearms since January 9, the start the implementation of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) gun ban.

The PRO1 reported that 83 firearms were either confiscated, recovered or surrendered and 37 persons were arrested by Pangasinan police; La Union police seized  30 firearms and arreste4d five violators; Ilocos Sur police confiscated  38 firearms and arrested two persons while  Ilocos Norte police  seized 15 firearms and arrested  four violators.  The Regional Drug Enforcement Unit confiscated four firearms and nabbed four violators.

Gun owners deposited 277 assorted firearms in the region for safekeeping until expired permits are renewed.

P/Brig. Gen. Emmanuel Peralta, PROI regional director, said the arrests and confiscation of the firearms were results of the police’s intensified operations in the region to indicate that the Region 1 police is serious in its campaign to enforce the gun ban to ensure a peaceful campaign period.

He also assured communities that the police remain apolitical will not be involved in partisan politics.

He recently ordered the reassignment of 87 PRO1 personnel with relatives vying for a political post and transferred chiefs of police who have been in their post for more than a year to avoid familiarity.

All police personnel were deployed to man 325 Comelec checkpoints that operate 24/7. (Eva Visperas)
