COVID-19 cases in Pangasinan continue to dip

AFTER almost two years living with the pandemic, COVID-19 finally appears to be headed to the exit door in Pangasinan as may be gleaned from the November 11 data of the Provincial Health Office (PHO).

The number of active cases logged by the PHO as of November 11 is down to just 303, from 504 last recorded on November 4 because 430 more patients that recovered, dwarfing the 207 new cases that were logged over a one week period.

The continuous downward trend of the contagion was hailed by local officials but who still cautioned their respective constituents not to relax their guard and become complacent lest the disease spikes again and will again put pressure on the existing health system.

The PHO data shows there is only an average of 31 new cases being  reported throughout Pangasinan daily while the recoveries net an average of 61 daily.

During the third surge of COVID-19 sometime last September 3, the province was averaging more than 400 new cases daily and there was a day in September when the cases reached an all-time high of more than 800.

As of November 11, the remaining 303 active cases are concentrated in 41 towns and cities while Alaminos City, Alcala, Balungao, Dasol, Infanta, Mabini and Sto. Tomas are already COVID-19 free.

Dagupan, an independent component city of Pangasinan, still has 52 cases as of November 9.

Still high on the COVID-19 watchlist of the PHO are Lingayen with 22 cases, Malasiqui (18), Sta. Barbara (17), Bayambang and Mangatarem (15 each), Aguilar, Binmaley, Bolinao and Calasiao (14 each), San Fabian (13), Labrador and Urdaneta City (12 each), San Carlos City (10) and San Nicolas (8) and Bautista (8).

Dr. Rheuel Bobis, COVID-19 focal person in Region 1, confirmed that all provinces in the region made up of Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur and La Union, including the city of Dagupan, are now on a safe zone, meaning their cases are presently at very manageable level and the use of existing COVID-19 beds in hospitals and isolation facilities has already eased.  (Leonardo Micua)
