Path to normalcy

FINALLY, we are seeing a downward trend in the COVID-19 contagion not only in Pangasinan but in Metro Manila as well.

The seeming synchronized decrease in number of new cases may actually be the tip of the iceberg that finally surfaced – the anticipated positive results of efforts of targeting at least 50% initially of targeted priorities for vaccination.

Undoubtedly, even the pasaways among us who gave no thought of complying with minimum health standards but nonetheless got themselves administered with anti-Covid vaccines were eventually locked in. With the vaccine in their system, the chances of them being infected and infecting others have been greatly marginalized.

But was it just the vaccine that slowed down the infection? Certainly not!

It was the resolve of the provincial government to meet and effectively respond to the daily challenges that enabled our national government that initially struggled to piece together the needed responses, from equipment to studying polices, to make headway in the rollout of vaccination program in the country.

Without the provincial government’s effective management, our communities would perhaps still be in constant fear of being infected by everyone, including  by our own family members.

But this positive development should not lull us into putting our defenses down. Instead, it should make us feel reassured that if we continue with our individual and collective cooperation, we are well on our way to meeting the New Normal with more confidence.

So, let’s all continue the journey to the path of normalcy.

Pacquiao puzzle

MANNY Pacquiao is facing a different kind of rival these days.  No, he is not a boxer atop the ring.  Not one of his presidential foes either for the May 2022 elections.  It is someone that you would least expect to oppose him: Jake Joson.  Joson is one of Pacquiao’s closest aides since 2004.  In the Ted Failon & DJ Cha Cha TV/radio morning show on TV5 this week, Joson accused Pacquiao of running away from a P165-million debt the 8-division world boxing champion owed Joson since two years ago.  To buttress his claim, Joson challenged Pacquiao to swear by the Bible if “I (Joson) am not telling the truth.”  Nikki de Vega, Pacquiao’s lawyer, said Pacquiao would not stoop to a “publicity stunt” and said Joson’s claims were politically motivated.  She said Pacquiao had ordered her to sue Joson for cyber libel.  But why does Pacquiao not publicly debunk Joson’s accusations?  A puzzle, indeed.
