YEARNING to enjoy a good book but couldn’t go to the library?

Wanting to relax in a cozy environment but the bookworm in you prods you to grab a good read?

Well, prepare your coffee and cookies and get ready to hit the beach.

The Junior Financial Executives of Colegio de Dagupan (JFinEx-CdD), in cooperation with the city government of Dagupan, had set up a little library at the Tondaligan Beach for public use.

Kayechelle Calderon, JFinEx-CdD president, and her group thought of putting up the mini lIbrary by the sea to increase book access to all ages and promote literacy by fostering community book exchanges.

“During these times where public libraries and schools are closed, we thought that this free little library can be an alternative way to continue learning while enjoying the ocean breeze,“ Calderon said in the city’s official Facebook Page.

So how does the little library work? It’s a take -and-share scheme.

If you see a book you would like to read, feel free to take it with you. Return it to the little library when you are done reading the book.

To keep the little library operating, If you have a book you’d like to share with other readers, you could  leave it there.

“We would like to remind everyone that books in the shelf must not be sold and we urge other organizations to help enrich the community’s book literacy,” Calderon said.

Tondaligan Park Administrator Dante “Jhun” Cadiz said the mini library have been attracting donors.

The latest of which is the Junior Chamber International (JCI) which donated 200 books.

When asked what inspired them to set up a free library, the JFinEx group said aside from sparking ingenuity by fostering community book exchanges, it will be working on building readers through this project.

The group plans to establish more community little libraries in the future.

So the next time you decide to stroll along the Tondaligan Beach, drop by the ‘Library by the Sea’. Find a comfortable place to sit and read a good book while listening to the rustling of sea waves and feeling the dampening effect of the cool sea breeze touching your face. (PIA Pangasinan/ VHS)
