Workplaces source of COVID-19 spike in Dagupan
276 ACTIVE CASES IN THE CITY
HIGH rate of infection in work places in Dagupan may have triggered the spike of COVID-19 cases in Dagupan that registered 46 new cases, just on August 17, raising the number of active cases in the city to an all-time high 278.
This was bared by Mayor Brian Lim in a video post on August 17 when the city logged 46 new Covid patients, 17 of whom he categorized as workplace infection.
Workplace infection occurs when the work place has poor ventilation and when workers share food with each other in the area, or eating side by side without regard to the social distancing protocol.
He said when the workers, unaware that the virus had already infected them, go home, they also infect members of their families. This is the reason, he said, that workers must exercise due vigilance in their workplaces to avoid infection.
A day earlier, Dr. Ophelia Rivera, the city’s COVID-19 focal person, shared her observation that most of the new cases being registered in Dagupan belong to the same families, which means that family members are now infecting each other.
Eight of the new confirmed cases, according to Lim, were medical front liners in different hospitals in Dagupan.
Amid the increasing COVID-19 cases in Dagupan, Lim called on the Dagupenos to heighten their level of discipline by religiously observing all the minimum health protocols, including regularly washing of hands with soap and water or alcohol, maintain social distancing and always wear face masks and face shields.
He said the city government will hire 19 nurses to be assigned to isolation facilities that will be designated and has begun stockpiling on equipment necessary in anticipation of a surge of cases.
Lim said he also mobilized the Public Order and Safety Office to disseminate information about his latest executive order about the new curfew hours and for the strict enforcement of the standard health and safety protocols as well as social distancing in a bid to prevent the spread of COVID-19 cases. He also ordered the police to go after violators of the health protocols. (Leonardo Micua)
