GOOD FOR SAN ROQUE DAM

THE Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) considers the monsoon rains enhanced by Typhoon Fabian experienced last week in Pangasinan may have caused some damage to farmlands but it served to fill the San Roque Dam’s water reserve.

PDRRMO operations center officer Shallom Balolong said, while Binga and Ambuklao Dam were releasing their excess water, the volume of rainwater was beneficial to the San Roque Dam in San Manuel whose water level was critically low for the past weeks.

San Roque Dam was forced to temporarily suspend its power generation when its water level plunged to 226.50 meters above sea level (masl), way below its  280 masl normal high-water level that affected the irrigation of 32,000 hectares of farmland in the 14 towns by the National Irrigation Administration.

Balolong noted that while the rains served the dam’s operations, portions of eight low-lying barangays in Calasiao town, namely, Lumbang, Longsos, Población West, Buenlag, Talibaew, Nalasian, Mancup and Lasip, were submerged by 1.5 feet up to 3.5 feet of floodwater.

On July 26, Monday, the Marusay River in Calasiao town was 8.9 ft above sea level and fortunately, the water level at the Sinocalan river dropped from 7.5 feet to 6.6 ft.

Balolong urged the public to continue to be alert and prepared because the state weather bureau has warned of intermittent rains to pour over the week. (Jerick Pasiliao/Ahikam Pasion)
