DECORP: Price hike not our fault
THE Dagupan Electric Corporation (Decorp) has been drawing heavy flak lately from consumers, some of which have gone viral online because of sudden increase in electric bills.
Decorp’s power rates increased from P4.6335 per kwh in May to P6.5989 per kilowatt hour (kwh) in June.
A typical household consuming 100 kWh per month will have to pay P196.54 more.
Atty. Randy Castilan, Decorp Legal Counsel, said while they understand the public’s ire, DECORP is not liable for the increase, as it is not the only entity in the electric industry and pointed to charges imposed for generation and transmission, and DECORP is only in the distribution sector.
He said Decorp had no control over the power plants’ performance, when they conducted their maintenance, or even shut down that caused the Red Alert and rotation brownouts in the entire Luzon Grid.
The forced unscheduled shutdowns influenced the spike in demand, which led to lack of supply, causing other power plants to produce more power — hence, the increase in generation charge.
However, he assured that a decrease in the generation charge by power plants can be expected soon as the rains set in. “The electricity price spikes during dry season, then goes down on rainy season up to the cold part of the year,” Castilan said.
He also clarified that the billing DECORP consumers recently received covered their electric consumption during the months of April 26 until May 25 when consumption is traditionally at its highest every year. (Ahikam Pasion)
