PLAYING like it was a game for the title, the reigning titlist University of Luzon (UL) Golden Tigers  displayed a strong determination to win and tame arch rival University of Pangasinan (UPang) Webczars, 83-77, during the opening of this year’s PRISAA (Private Schools Athletic Association) Pangasinan-Dagupan  Basketball Invitational Championship held Thursday at the Dagupan People’s Astrodome.

The league’s top seed, the Golden Tigers under Coach Jack Vidal, was reinforced by six new recruits from Manila.

They sized up the game at the first period, 21-21 all; stayed at bay at the first half, 36-34; and led by six at the third quarter, 61-55, before his four of the six Manileno boys worked hard in the last quarter to pace the tempo, 71-61, with three minutes left and eventually thwarted the defiant 2005 champions by six points.

The four Manilenos, combining a total of 46 points, were led by Jonathan Panunciar with a team high of 15 points. Norman Ilao drilled in 14 while Claude Cubo and Marbin Macaladlad converted 9 and 8 points, respectively. San Jacinto, born Martin Callao contributed 12.

In the losing effort, the veteran Webczars’ wily point-guard Albert Carcha, Calasiao’s pride, exploded with a game high of 24 points. Three-point specialist Bugallon son Bryan Santiallan registered 15. Gian Cruz and Joey Abalos playing their best game so far buried 11 and 12 points, respectively.

In the first game, the Lyceum Northwestern University (LNU) Dukes proved their supremacy over the dark horse AIE-Commerce College Eagles, 73-64, and remained on track as title contender of this year’s joust.

The perennial second runner-up Dukes of Atty. Gonzalo Duque will prove their worth anew as diadem challenger against big guns of Golden Tigers and Webczars when they collide third week of next month.

In the third game, the aggressive   PIMSAT clobbered Colegio de Dagupan, 82-58, while the much-improved Pangasinan State University (PSU) plastered PAMMA, 84-41 in the fourth and last game of the day.

Hostilities resume tomorrow at the same venue.—JAG,Jr.
