CLASSROOMS FOR COVID ISOLATION

THE use of schoolrooms in any locality as additional isolation rooms for COVID-19 patients may be done but only as a last resort.

This was the condition aired by Cesar Bucsit, spokesman of Department of Education Region 1, when asked about the possibility of such situation during the virtual forum of the KBP on Thursday.

Bucsit was commenting on the proposal to tap classrooms to be used as isolation rooms for COVID-19 patients in case the existing facilities could no longer accommodate the rising number of patients in any given locality.

He said while the possibility of using the classrooms as an alternative is remote, it can only be possible if it is the only solution left and the last resort.

Citing the low incidence of active positive cases of COVID-19 in Region 1 comprising of Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte, he said it cannot possibly happen soon.

Meanwhile, he hailed the postponement of the opening of classes from August 24 to October 5 because it has given teachers more time to prepare for the new system of educating the learners – blending modular instruction and online instruction.

Bucsit said the most preferred instruction in the region is the modular platform that allows modules to be distributed to the learners.

The modules are already being mass-produced for distribution when classes finally start, he said, adding that school year 2020 to 2021 will last for more than 100 days with no face-to-face instruction.

In places where Internet connection is possible, online instruction will also be given to pupils and students with compliant gadgets in their homes. (Leonardo Micua)
