Bolinao’s Santiago Island Bridge starts construction 2021
THE Santiago Island Bridge that will connect seven islands barangays to the mainland here is set to be constructed next year.
Former First District Rep. Jesus Celeste said he already met with Department of Public Works and Highways local officials on Aug. 7 to discuss the bidding for the project before the year ends. Construction is expected to immediately start in 2021.
The bridge, about 600 meters long, will connect seven coastal barangays, namely, Binabalian, Goyoden, Lucero, Pilar, Salud, Dewey and Victory. For the longest time, these areas are reached through the use of a barge provided by Celeste.
During Martial Law regime, Celeste said there was a ferryboat.
He said it took him two years to work out the needed P600-million funding of the project and the plan was finally firmed up during a visit of Sen. Cynthia Villar.
Celeste said registered voters alone in Santiago Island is about 12,000 and the construction of the bridge will not only boost economic activities in the area, particularly boost tourism because of the white sand beach but push for the creation of a new municipality.
There is already a seven-hectare lot donated by Celeste’s wife for the construction of a town hall, park, market and cemetery.
Celeste said Barangay Binabalian was the first seat of the local government during the Spanish period.
