ILLEGAL drug trading in Pangasinan was also not spared by the quarantine and lockdown protocol since March and suffered a slump in spite of the continued high demand among drug users.

This was the indication gleaned from the accomplishment of the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office (PPPO) throughout the lockdown period from March 16 to June 24, 2020 that resulted in the arrest of 102 persons from 84 operations conducted in the campaign against the illegal drug trade.

The number of police operations is less than the 236 arrests made from 220 operations of the Pangasinan police over the same period last year.

The police attributed the sharp decline to the marked limited supply of illegal drugs that entered the province since the implementation of lockdown last March 17 to June 25 this year.

According to police operatives, the demand for illegal drugs remains high but it has been checked by stringent quarantine checkpoint and anti-criminality checkpoint operations implemented by the Pangasinan police led by P/Colonel Redrico Maranan.

The main sources of marijuana are from the triboundaries of La Union, Benguet and Nueva Ecija while the shabu supply in Pangasinan is through the traditional drug route from the south: the National Capitol Regions, Tarlac and Region 4. (Nora Dominguez)
